For this work, I photographed books on the early 20th-century avant-garde, containing reproductions of photographs and books. Several layers of reproduction come into play. Through formal devices, such as composition, framing, and lighting, the context from which the reproductions came—that is, the page, the book, and their edges—is made apparent. This piece explores the idea of reproducibility by looking at the relationships between type, photography, and the book.
